What's this sermon about?

Have you ever found yourself caught between what society expects and what your heart knows to be right? In this past Sunday's sermon based on Remember the Titans, Brenden reflected on the challenges faced by TC Williams High School as they overcame societal prejudices. Just as the team's unity was challenged, Brenden shared the biblical story of Peter's reluctance to embrace the inclusion of non-Jews, found in Galatians 2:11-13. He encouraged the congregation to confront their own biases and extend love across boundaries, much like Coach Boone urged his players at Gettysburg. And by navigating these discussions, Brenden helped us recognize the ongoing human inclination towards division and challenged us to act courageously in our faith.

Ice Breaker:

"Have you ever been in a setting where you had to bridge a divide, similar to the team in 'Remember The Titans'?"

Sermon Questions:

  1. Read Galatians 2:11-13 and reflect—how do you see Peter's struggle with inclusion mirrored in today's society? What lessons can we learn from his experience?
  2. In his sermon, Brenden mentioned the human tendency towards division. What are some modern examples of this, and how can we, as a church, actively work against it?
  3. Coach Boone challenged his team to confront their biases at Gettysburg. What are some practical steps we can take to challenge and overcome our own biases in daily life?
  4. Discuss a time when you had to make a difficult decision to stand up for what was right, even if it meant going against the crowd. How did your faith influence your decision?
  5. How can we apply the message of unity and equality at the foot of the cross in our interactions within our community and beyond? What specific actions can we take this week to embody this message?
